Suggested duration (weeks or months) of the internship: 8 months

Suggested start date: April 20, 2019

Suggested end date: December 20, 2019.

CARE is a leading humanitarian organization fighting global poverty. We place special focus on working alongside poor women because, equipped with the proper resources, women have the power to help whole families and entire communities escape poverty. CARE’s flagship program on Sexual and Reproductive Health in Emergencies (SRH-E), SAFPAC Initiative, aims to reduce women’s unintended pregnancies and deaths from unsafe abortion in acute emergencies and chronically crisis-affected countries. In line with CAREs commitment to reach 100 million women by 2020 and empower them to exercise their sexual and reproductive health rights, the SAFPAC global team started in 2016 to support three strategic CARE country offices (Chad, DRC and Mali) to conduct a landscaping study on existing policies and legal framework related to sexual and reproductive health including opening dialogue with local stakeholders on the consequences of unsafe abortions. This work galvanized local civil society organizations and convened for the first time ever communities to talk about unsafe abortion and to take actions to prevent them or ensure access to those in need. While the experience is similar in the three countries there are some specifics that require documentation and sharing to inform future project development.

The purpose of the internship will be to support the documentation and analysis of the country-specific approach developed and implemented to open dialogue on unsafe abortion, identify key actors, their roles and how they were selected, and identify bottlenecks and lessons learned to inform future programming especially in crisis affected and low resource settings.
• Read existing documents (Landscape study reports, Regional Impact Growth Strategies, SRHR Regional strategies and action plans; SRHR Regional Annual Report, SRHR Regional workshop reports, SRHR Regional Readiness assessment, SAFPAC Annual reports, SAFPAC Evaluation of country offices and region perceptions etc.)
• Sciences Po Landscape analysis report
• GEMMA students’ safe abortion report
• Access and analyze SAFPAC project DISC (2015-2018)
• Conduct interviews/surveys with SAFPAC staff, Ministry of Health staff, local activists etc and learn from them the story behind the apparent success of these community-based approaches
• Generate a final report describing achievements by country, and similarities and differences by country
• Design a framework/model for this particular work, identify and share elements of success, challenges, lessons learned and make recommendations
• Share findings during a SRHR meeting or brownbag.

Learning Objectives:
• Understanding the national context that created opportunities to engage in such a sensitive topic
• Identify key stakeholders, strategies to identify them and roles played
• Share progress made so far, challenges and bottlenecks
• Share lessons learned and recommendations.

Deliverables:
• Data analysis of key SRHR indicators by country (DRC, Chad and Mali)
• Interviews with SAFPAC global and country teams, Civil society organizations, partners of CARE and activists etc.
• Programmatic model with key components
• Final report with specific recommendations
